The lapping process is used whenever one or more of the following is required; an extremely flat surface, an extremely smooth surface, or an extremely tight thickness tolerance. The lapping process itself is performed by a machine that essentially rubs two surfaces

together, utilizing an abrasive between them to remove material from the machined part. The process can produce flatness variation down to as little as 1 HLB (11.6 micro inches), and surface finishes down to 4 Ra on a consistent basis.
